Proverbs19:20-21 “Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future. Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”
Man vs God. Our thoughts vs His thoughts. Our fickle plans vs His eternal purposes. Our fleeting pain or gain vs His everlasting glory.
Every year, we have Marriage Preparation Retreat (MPR). We share God’s Word on how to be loving husbands and wives, on good sex, on handling money, relating to our in-laws and raising Godly kids.
Not easy to be told who we are, how to behave, how to repent and how to mature. Why?
Everything within our fallen nature leans towards listening and trusting in the voice of self. Our self interest, importance and righteousness often masquerades as God’s interest, importance and righteousness.🙉
Proverbs was written for God’s people in the Old Testament, Israel, to listen to God’s instruction for life.
Sadly, Israel suffered from skewed and selective listening. She became wise in her own eyes – and fools in God’s eyes -when she chose to ignore God speaking to her heart and home.
We, likewise, are very prone to brush God aside when we trash our parents, face temptations, sin with our tongues and plot against our neighbour – all major themes of fearing God in Proverbs.
Oh, how we need God in the titanic struggle we face moment by moment to come clean with Him, with our hearts and with our loved ones.
And when we are finally taught to humbly listen and fear God above all else, only then is true wisdom, freedom and fullness.
Only then will we experience the goodness of God’s singular purpose – of us loving, fearing and worshipping Him – overwhelming our many grandiose plans, wearying worries and mixed agendas.
